Leagues: 2009 Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Junior Swimming League, final – 21st June
Results |
The young swimmers of City of Derby Swimming Club travelled to Mansfield at the weekend to compete in the final of the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Junior Swimming League. Facing the strongest teams in the league, the swimmers built on their performances of earlier rounds of the competition and put on a spirited defence of their title as league champions. In the end however they were overwhelmed by a powerful Nottingham Leander squad which dominated the gala. The swimmers had the consolation however of a good second place finish, ahead of rivals Chesterfield, who beat them in the second round, and comfortably ahead of Long Eaton.
 | | The team won eight of their events in total and also claimed a further 11 second place and 15 third place finishes. In the girls ten year age group, Rhianna Sheehan once again had great success, winning both the butterfly and backstroke events while Eleanor Baldwin won the freestyle event. They were joined by Charlotte Bentley and Megan Smith to take second place in their freestyle relay event.
There was success also for the 11 year girls with Rebecca Jones winning the backstroke and coming second in the freestyle event and Frances Spink winning the breaststroke event. Rebecca and Frances teamed up with Rhianna and Eleanor to win their freestyle relay event. Meanwhile for the 12 year age group girls, swimming in their last diddy league gala, there was a win for Sarah Vasey in the breaststroke event and second place finishes for Eve Farnsworth in the backstroke and Laura Hindle in the freestyle events. Eve, Sarah and Laura were joined by Rebecca Jones to come second in the medley relay and by Jayne Stallion to come second in their freestyle relay event.
For the boys, Declan Smith won the breaststroke event in the 9 year age group while Ben Slevin achieved second place in the 10 year freestyle event. Ben and Declan were joined by Joe Hurst and Simon McIntyre to come second in the 10 year medley relay. There were second place finishes also for the boys 11 year team of Matt Wood, Adam Goodwin, Lucca Hempsall and Ryan Reader in their freestyle event and by the boys 12 year team of Kyle Freeman, Jack Sampson, Matt and Ryan in both their Freestyle and medley relay events.
