Major Champs:
2009 British Gas Masters and Senior Age Group Championships – Cardiff, 19th to 21st June

      

A small group of City of Derby Masters swimmers travelled to Cardiff at the weekend, where they were competing in the British Gas Masters and Senior Age Group Championships.  The squad of seven swimmers had great success, winning a total of five gold medals between them as well as taking a further eight silver and three bronze medals.

David Bower and Val Thorp took two gold medals apiece.  David, competing in the 30 – 34 age group took gold in the 200m and 400m IM events, while Val won her 50m and 100m freestyle events in the 55 – 59 year age group.  David also took silver in the 100m Butterfly and bronze in the 50m breaststroke events while Val took silver in the 800m Freestyle and bronze in the 1500m freestyle.

There was success also for David Bailey in the 40 – 44 year age group with a win in the 800m freestyle and second place in the 1500m freestyle event.  Meanwhile Sarah Brandrick won three silver medals in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle events as well as taking fourth place in both the 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly. 

Christine Hawkrigg, competing in the 25 – 29 year age group, won silver in the 200m breaststroke and bronze in the 50m breaststroke event as well as taking fourth place in the 100m breaststroke and fifth in the 400m freestyle event.  Emma Davies won silver in the 200m butterfly event in the 30 – 34 age group as well as fourth place finishes in both the 100m and 200m backstroke events and sixth place in the 50m backstroke.  Helen Treece, competing in the 40 – 44 year age group came in seventh place in the 800m freestyle event and also had three 13th place finishes in the 50m, 200m and 400m freestyle events.
